تعتبر رقابة الجودة من المراحل الأساسية والهامة في مجال الإنتاج الميكروفيلمي شأنها في ذلك شأن رقابة الجودة في أي منتج من المنتجات الصناعية. وإنتاج الميكروفيلم بدون رقابة على الجودة يؤدي إلى عواقب وخيمة لا تحمد عواقبها وفقد عنصر التماثل في الإنتاج الميكروفيلمي وتتجسم أهمية رقابة الجودة في مجال الإنتاج الميكروفيلمي في أنها الوسيلة الوحيدة التي بها يمكن الحكم على جودة الصورة الميكروفيلمية وعلى مدى مطابقتها للمواصفات القياسية العالمية أو المواصفات المطلوبة، كما تتجسم أهمية رقابة الجودة في أنها تعمل على تحقيق الإنتاج بأقل تكلفة وفي أقل وقت وبأقل مجهود. وعنصر التشابه في المواصفات والذي يعتبر الشاغل الهام لرقابة الجودة يساعد على تبادل التسجيلات الميكروفيلمية بين مراكز المعلومات كما يساعد على استخدام الأجهزة والأشكال على أوسع نطاق. ويصعب إنتاج الميكروفيلم بدون رقابة جودة للأسباب الآتية: 1- اختلاف أنواع ودقة أجهزة الميكروفيلم. 2- التباين الكبير في حدود تفاوت دقة الأفلام الخام. 3- تنوع المستندات المطلوبة تصويرها. 4- التغيير الدائم في دقة وحساسية الأفلام الخام. 5- ظروف التخزين المختلفة للأفلام الخام وما يصاحبها من تغير يصعب إحكامه. 6- اختلاف ظروف التصوير. وللنظرة يصعب فحص كل صورة على الفيلم الذي يحول ما بين 2000 إلى 20.000 صورة وألا يصبح الأمر مكلفاً أكثر من جني ثمرة رقابة الجودة، ومن أجل ذلك يوجد ثلاث اختبارات أساسية في مجال الميكروفيلم والذي بهم يمكن الحكم على جودة الصورة الميكروفيلمية وعلى الفيلم ككل إلى اقصى حد ممكن، والاختبارات الأساسية لأفلام هاليدات الفضة والتي تعالج معالجة تقليدية (سائلة wet-processeing) هي: 1- اختبار الكثافة البصرية. 2- اختبار قوة التحديد. 3- اختبار الترسبات الكيميائية (الهيبو) وإلى جانب ذلك يتم فحص الفيلم لمعرفة أي سهو أو خطأ في تصوير مستند أو وجود خدوش إلى آخر العيوب المرئية.
