العلم لغة مصدر لكلمة تعليم، وعلم الشيء عرفه، علم الشيء علماً عرفه، ورجل علامة أي عالم جداً، ويرى بعض المفكرين أن كلمة علم (Science) يقصد بها مجال كليات العلوم، فيما يرى البعض الآخر توسيع مدلول كلمة علم، بحيث يضم مجال كليات العلوم والبحوث الجادة والموضوعية في التاريخ والآداب والتربية والفنون، وهناك مفكرون آخرون يحددون العلم من خلال منهجه الذي يرتكز على دعائم أساسية كوضع الفروض أو الفرضيات (Hypotheses) والملاحظة (Observation) وإجراء التجارب (Deductive).
ومما يزيد الأمر تعقيداً، الفهم غير الدقيق لكلمة عالم، حيث يعتقد البعض أن العالم هو شخص من نوع خاص، يعالج الحقائق في المختبرات؛ ومفهوم آخر يتلخص بأن العالم إنسان يحسن التفكير ويضع النظريات المعقدة، وثالثها يرى بأن أهداف العالم زيادة المخترعات والمكتشفات، وأن هذه المفاهيم وغيرها تعيق فهم العلم وتفهم البحث العلمي بصورة عامة، وتجعل مهمة القيام بالبحث مهمة صعبة.
