إميل يوسف عواد يختلف كل الاختلاف عن كثير من الكتّاب العرب الذين يعبّرون عن أفكارهم بجهد جهيد في عالم خيالي بعيد عن واقع الحياة. إنما هو قصّاص بجوهره وهو يعي هذا الجوهر. ويعرف إميل يوسف عواد كيف يتوارى أمام الأقصوصة وكيف يوحي إلى القارئ الشعور بالمشاكل التي يعالجها متحاشياً العرض الثقيل وحريصاً خصوصاً على أن لا يملي على تلك المشاكل حلاً من عنده.
إن فضيلة الحياء هذه التي يتمتع بها الفنان، بل إن هذه الرجولة، كما يدعوها مرسيل أشار، لجديرة بالتنويه وهي مزيّة نادرة تضاف إلى ما يتمتّع به المؤلف من مزايا وهي كثيرة.
إنها لمتعة من متع النفس أن يقرأ المرء ويعيد قراءة تلك الصفحات البسيطة المؤثرة الشعرية التي تلقي على وجه لبنان الخالد، المتغيّر أبداً، خيوطاً من هالة كلها حنان.
لا محل هنا لإقليمية، ومن الصعب أن يخضع إميل يوسف عواد لتصنيف. وإذا كان القارئ يتنشّق من أقاصيصه شذا الجبل اللبناني الرطب المنعش حيث تجد لميا الفتاة الشاردة بعثاً مطهراً لجسدها وروحها عبر عادات وتقاليد ترجع إلى ألوف السنين، وإذا تراءى له فيها حب الشعب للخوارق البريئة والشعر الصافي ينبع من قلب الطبيعة، فإنه لواجد فيها كذلك وصفاً صادقاً لمساوئ مجتمع ينخره نظام مادي من أكثر الأنظمة نهماً وتهالكاً على اللذة.
