لوحة اخاذة عن مآسي الإنسان الفقير في الحضارة التكنولوجية المبرمجة حيث تنقسم المجتمعات إلى طبقتين، الواحدة ثرية مترفة إلى حد البطر وأخرى، التي هي أغلب سكان البلدة معدمة، يعوزها الخبز أحياناً، وهي تصارع من أجل البقاء، عالم غريب عنك بأناسه وظروف حياة كل منهم، للوهلة الأولى بعيد عنا كل البعد.
هذا الشعور بالغرابة يرافقك وأنت تقرأ بصورة خاصة قصة (أرض) التي يبدأ بها الكتاب والتي هي أطول قصص المجموعة واسمها الأرض حيث تواجهك كل لحظة مآسي عالم مشبع ببؤس إنسان يعوزه الحد الأدنى من الغذاء والدفء... فهو دوماً بمحاذاة الموت، فتعاطف عفوياً مع هؤلاء الناس فإنسان هذه القصص، وإن كان بعيداً كل البعد عنا تاريخاً وبيئة ومشكلات...
فهو في الوقت ذاته تريبنا في المشاعر الإنسانية، فالإقطاعي واحد عندنا وعندهم وكذلك إستبداد الرأسمالي... وكلنا وضعنا يوماً أملنا في النظام الإشتراكي وما نزال نأمل.
ذلكم هو مغزى القصص البلغارية التي ترجمها لنا الأستاذ ميخائيل عيد بأسلوب فيه الكثير من الحيوية والشاعرية ليدلك على أن الإنسان واحد في كل زمان ومكان؛ وعلى أن هموم البلغاري العادي شبيه لحد كبير بهموم اللبناني والمصري الفقير وغيرهما.
إن هذا الكتاب لا يختصر على وصف البؤس بل هو موجه بالأحرى نحو تجاوزه والإنسان يعيش بالعمل المثمر والأمل.
