نظراً لتطور أدوات التشخيص عموماً وإهتمام المعنيين كالوالدين والأطباء وغيرهم، فقد بدا واضحاً بأن إضطراب التوحد هو أكبر بكثير من مما كان يظن البعض، إذ تشير الإحصائيات في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، على سبيل المثال، بأن من بين كل 150 طفل يولودون يولد طفل واحد مصاب بالتوحد.
كما أشارت الإحصائيات بأن التوحد أصبح من الإصابات الخطيرة إذ يضاهي في شيوعه الأمراض الخطيرة لسرطان الثدي والإيدز.
وفي إطار ذلك فقد زاد وعي المجتمع بهذا المرض الذي ما زال يكتنفه غموض كبير في منطقتنا العربية، إلاّ أن هذا الوعي المحدود يحول دون القدرة على إكتشاف مثل هذه الإصابات في مراحل عمرية مبكرة.
وإنطلاقاً من ضرورة الكشف عن هذا الإضطراب الخطير في مراحل مبكرة فلا بد من توافر أدوات تشخيصية ملائمة للكشف عنه، ويأتي هذا المقياس ليلبي حاجة الأخصائيين والأهل إلى مقياس يتمتع بصدق وثبات عاليين ويمتاز كذلك بالبساطة وسهولة الإستخدام.
يتكون مقياس التوحد من ثلاثة إختبارات فرعية تقيس: السلوكيات النمطية والتواصل اللغوي والإشاري والتفاعل الإجتماعي، ويتكون إختبار السلوكيات النمطية من 14 فقرة، كما يتكون إختبار التواصل من 14 فقرة أخرى، بينما يتكون إختبار التفاعل الإجتماعي من 19 فقرة، وقد تم تطوير فقرات المقياس عقب مراجعة عدد من مقاييس التوحد إذ تم بناء الفقرات من خلال الإستفادة من عدد من مقاييس التوحد وخاصة مقياس جيليام، كما تم بناء الفقرات أيضاً من خلال الإستفادة من أحدث تعريفات التوحد وخصائصه التي توفرها في الدراسات السابقة.
وقد قسمت هذه الدراسة إلى ثلاثة فصول وزعت على الشكل التالي: الفصل الأول: "نظرة عامة على التوحد ومقياس التوحد"، الفصل الثاني: "إجراءات التطبيق والتصحيح"، الفصل الثالث: "تفسير درجات مقياس التوحد".
