موضوع الإله مردوخ، كبير الآلهة البابلية، له أهمية دينية لسكان بلاد الرافدين بشكل عام وسكان مدينة بابل الحاضنة له بشكل خاص، وكان يتميز هذا الإله من غيره من الآلهة في بلاد الرافدين، من حيث رموزه التي تميّز بها، متمثلة بالقوة والعظمة من جانب وقربه من الإنسان والإحتكاك به وبعمله من جانب آخر، ونظراً لأهميته السياسية المعرفية التي انعكست على ملوك تلك المدينة وسكانها فقد كان له أثر بارز في تلك الجوانب المعرفية، وقد تناولنا ما لها الإله من دور في الأدب البابلي القديم أهمها قصة الخليقة التي مثلت مرآة للأدب العراقي القديم وما وصل إليه من إبداع في تلك الحقبة.
