يلقي هذا الكتاب نظرة على مسارات الفكر القومي وإتّجاهاته المختلفة منذ عصر النهضة حتَّى يومنا هذا بصورة موجزة مكثّفة بالمعلومات، ويعتمد على الموضوعيّة والحيادية في طرح الجانب السياسي للموضوع، ويتناول أيضاً في البحث تجربة حركة القوميين العرب كنموذج سياسي للتطبيق الفعلي القوميّة العربية في مقاربة نقدية لهذه التجربة التي استمرّت منذ مطلع الخمسينات حتَّى أواسط السبعينات.
ويسلّط الضوء على الفكرة القومية السورية الذي بشّر بها أنطون سعادة مؤسّس الحزب السوري القومي الإجتماعي وآفاقها، وكذلك على النزعة القومية المصرية الوطنية، التي تبنّاها ودافع عنها مصطفى كامل، ويقارب فكر المنادين بالقوميّة اللبنانيّة، ويفصّل نظرة مؤسّس الحزب التقدّمي الإشتراكي الشهيد كمال جنبلاط للمفهوم التقدّمي للقومية، ويجري مراجعة نقدية للفكر القومي العربي وللأنظمة التي تبنّته.
ويتوصّل في نهايتها إلى أنه من الضروري أن يجري هذا التوجّه القومي مراجعة شاملة لطروحاته السابقة، وأن يترك المجال الرحب للشعوب العربية، بلعب دورها الفاعل في رفد حراكها السياسي القومي العربي بالتوجّه الديمقراطي الذي يحفظ حقوق الإنسان العربي وحريّته بعيداً عن المنطق التسلّطي، أو الحكم الكلّي، أو حكم الحزب الواحد، الذي يتناقض مع الجوهر التعدّدي للديمقراطيّة، وهو بذلك توقّع حصول إنتفاضات شعبية داخل الأنظمة العربية تطالب بالحرية والديمقراطيّة والعدالة الإجتماعية يعكسها حالياً ما تشهده المنطقة العربية من تغيّرات، وتبدّلات جذرية في العديد من أقطارها، وتهاوي بعض أنظمتها أمام مطالبة الشعب بالإصلاحات الإقتصادية والإجتماعية والسياسية بإتّجاه قيام أنظمة بديلة وطنية ديمقراطية تجمع بين الجانبين السياسي والإجتماعي للديمقراطية...
