لا يمكن للمفسر معرفة تفسير الآية دون الوقوف على قصتها وبيان سبب نزولها، ذلك أن معرفة سبب النزول يعين على فهم الآية لأن العلم بالسبب يورث العلم بالمسبب. وهذا الكتاب أسباب النزول المسمى الباب المنقول في أسباب النزول كرسه السيوطي لهذا العلم، وفيه لخص ما جاء في جوامع الحديث والأصول، مستخلصا ما ورد في كتب وتفاسير السلف من أسباب النزول. وكتابة هذا يشبه كتاب " الواحدي" في هذا الفن الا أنه يتميز بأمور أحدها: الإختصار، وثانيها: الجمع الكثير فقد حوى زيادات كثيرة على ما ذكر الواحدي وقد ميزها بسورة [ك] رمزا عليه. ثالثها: عزوة كل حديث إلى من خرّجه من أصحاب الكتب المعتبرة كالكتب السنة والمستدرك وصحيح ابن حيّان وسنن البيهقي والدارقطني ومسانيد أحمد والبراز وأبي يعلى ومعاجم الطبراني وغيرهم، رابعها: تمييز الصحيح من غيره والمقبول من الحق المردود. خامسها: الجمع بين الروايات المتعارضة، سادسها: تنمية ما ليس من أسباب النزول.
