في المقدمة التي يفتتح بها العلامة عبد المعطي السملاوي كتابه "البهجة السُّنيَّة بشرح القصيدة الزينيية" يوضح الغرض من شرح (القصيدة الزينية" فيقول: "لما كان المدح أرفع مقاصد الشعراء وأعلاها، وأنفسها وأغلاها؛ إذ هو رأس مال الشاعر الذي يعوِّل عليه، ومقصده الذي يرجع في التوسُّل للمقاصد السنَّية إليه، وقد ملئت به الدواوين وشحنت به الدفاتر، وحفيت بكثرته الأقلام ونفذت دون نفاذه المحابر، وكانت المقدمة المنسوبة للإمام علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه أنفَسَ المدائح والمواعظ عقداً، وأعلاها مقاماً وأعذبها وداً، اقتضى لذلك غرضي...".
وغرض المؤلف كما تشير إليه صفحات الكتاب هو إضافة شرحاً جديداً للقصيدة الزينيية، وذلك بأن يحلّ بعض ألفاظها، ويبين معانيها، ويقرب ما بَعُدَ تناولُه من بحار مقاصدها، وقد اعتمد في شرحه على كتب عديدة، ككتاب "كنه المراد بشرح بانت سعاد"، وكتاب "زهرة الرياض ونزهة القلوب المراض"... وغير ذلك من كتب جليلة يطول ذكرها... والقصيدة هي من البحر الكامل، وقافيتها تسمى متداركاً".
ومن اجواء القصيدة نقرأ: "صرمت حِبَالك بعد وصلت زينب... والدهر فيه تصرُّمٌ وتقلبُ"... "نشرت ذوائبها التي تزهو بها... سوداً ورأسَّكَ كالنعامةِ أشيبُ"... "واستنفرتْ لمَّا رأتكَ وطالما... كانتْ تحنُّ إلى لِقاك وترغبُ".
