يعد كتاب أم العبر لمفتي ماردين الشيخ عبد السلام بن عمر المارديني (1200- 1258هـ)، ولا سيما فصوله الأخيرة من الكتب التاريخية المهمة التي تؤرخ لبعض مناطق كردستان وهي مدينة ماردين والمناطق المحيطة بها غربي كردستان، والكاتب وإن كان يؤرخ - على عادة المؤرخين القدامى - للحكام والولاة بالدرجة الرئيسية، إلا أنه يذكر معلومات غير قليلة عن التركيبة الإجتماعية والعمرانية لمدينته، ويورد أخباراً مهمة عن العشائر الكردية - والعربية كذلك - المحيطة بالمنطقة معتمداً في ذلك على مصادر أهمها مشاهداته ومذكراته الشخصية، مما يضفي على الموضوع الجدة والحيوية.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب التاريخية، عمد المؤلفان على تحقيقه ونشره، إحياء لتراث هؤلاء العلماء، وقد اختار القسم الثاني من الكتاب الذي يُعنى بتاريخ ماردين لأهميته التاريخية وندرة المعلومات الواردة فيه.
