بالنسبة للمصريين، لم ينعكس منطق التعددي في نشأة الكون فقط، بل في آلهتهم التي مثل العديد منها عنصراً بدائياً مفرداً او قوة للطبيعة والمجتمع البشري، وفي بلاد ما بين النهرين، تكمن أصول حضارتها في قابلية السكان المقيمين في مناطق الطمي لإدارة بيئتهم.
وهكذا تضمنت القيم الأساسية لثقافتهم مبكراً رغبةً قوية بالإدارة والتخطيط، وجرى التعبير عنها بالرسومات السومرية والأكادية، وكانت الخطط الفعالة أبدية وثابتة، غير شخصية ولا ممثلة لسلطة معينة، أما بالنسبة للإغريق، فقد كانت الحياة الفردية والجماعية تفاعلاً مستمراً مع الآلهة، وشكلت المقدسات الشعبية مركز المجتمع وحدوده، وإذا لم يكن ثمة تجاهل للآلهة والقدر، فلأن الإنسان يتحمل في نهاية المطاف المسؤولية كاملة.
تلك لمحات من إشتغال هذا الكتاب الذي تتضاعف أهميته كما اقترن بعصرنا هذا.
