يعتبر إنجيل القديس متى، النص الكتابي الأكثر مدروسية في نصوص التراث الآبائي التفسيري. وقد كان أوريجنس أول من باشر بالكتابة حول هذا الإنجيل حين وضع 25 مجلداً عنه في منتصف القرن الثالث. وبعد قرن من الزمن، حين بدأ الغرب اللاتيني بالكتابات الآبائية، كان هيلاريون أسقف بواتييه أول من كتب حول متى في منتصف القرن الرابع.
منذ ذلك الحين، بات أول الأناجيل هذا أكثر الأسفار التي عالجتها التفاسير الآبائية. وتشكل رباعية أيرونيموس التفسير الشهير الذي نجهل كاتبه والذي يبقى غير مكتمل أهم هذه الكتابات، يضاف إليها، سلسلة المقتطفات اليونانية المأخوذة من تفاسير ثيودور أسقف هيراقلية، وابوليناريوس اللاذقي، وكيراس الإسكندري، وثيودور المبسوستي.
وتفيدنا العظات القديمة بتأملات موسعة لا سيما عظات يوحنا الذهبي الفم التسعون وعظات كروماتيوس أسقف أكويلا التسع والخمسون حول متى إضافة إلى ذلك، تغني مكتبتنا الدينية عظات كتبها كبار الاهوتيين أمثال أوغسطين وغريغوريوس الكبير وآباء آخرين.
فيض من المؤلفات الآبائية نجد معظمها في هذا الكتاب وتعطينا فكرة وافية عن التفاسير القديمة لبشارة القديس متى.
