لجان تلتها لجان، شكلت ولم نسمع عن مصيرها شيء، إشاعات تطلق من هنا وهناك للطعن في أخىفه وتشويه سيرته الشخصية يقف وراءها الاحتلال وعملاؤه، واتهامات قوية من أقرب المقربين بأنه اغتيل مسموماً، وفي المقابل وباستثناء دموع ذرفت في الأيام الأولى، ومظاهر حزن مصطنع أمام عدسات الكاميرات من قبل حاشية انقلبت عليه، ومقالات ومرثيات وأشعار في ذكرى رحيله، مرت قضية مرضه وموته مرور الكرام دون تحقيق أو تمحيص، أو حتى اهتمام صوري يحافظ على ماء الوجه ويبدد الشكوك، بل شنت حملات القضاء على كل ما يمت لعرفات والعرفاتية بصلة، ومن أقرب المقربين إليه يوم كان في قوته وجبروته، في جحود غريب من أناس طالما اعتبروا عرفات رمزهم وأباهم، ولتحتزل مسيرته في احتفالات ومهرجانات تأبين، إن أقاموها هذا العام، ربما تفادوها في القادم من الأعوام!
ليس من مهام هذا البحث النبش في ماضي الرجل، ونصب المحاكم للخوض في سلبياته وإيجابياته، أو محاولة لتقييم مرحلة امتدت لعقود، فقد أفضى الرجل لما قدم، وحسابه وحسابنا على من خلقه وخلقنا، ولا أنكر إطلاقاً أنني كنت ولا زلت من أشد المعارضين للنهج الذي قاده عرفات، وكتبت في ذلك الكثير، ووجهت له الرسائل المباشرة، ولا أنكر ولا أنفي، بل أؤكد أنني من أكثر الناس رفضاً للنهج الذي مورس طوال 40 عاماً من تفرد بالسلطة والمال والقرار وترقية للفاسدين والتغاضي عن أخطاء الكثيرين والمغامرة والمقامرة بمصير وقضية الشعب الفلسطيني، لكن لا يمكن في الوقت ذاته لأي منا أن يجعل الخلاف في الرأي والاعتراض على الأسلوب والمنهج سبباً للاصطياد في الماء العكر لتسجيل موقف هنا أو هناك، كما أن عدم القبول بنهج أوسلو وإفرازاته لا يعفينا من المسؤولية والأمانة، ولا يجعلنا نصمت صمت القبور إزاء جريمة بدأت معالمها بالظهور، ولا يجعلنا نقر بما تعرض له عرفات في أيام مرضه الأخير من تلاعب بمصيره وتنازع على مرضه، بل على جسده بعد وفاته، فيما يبدو محاولة للتغطية على جريمة أصبحت مقتنعاً بحدوثها أكثر من أي وقت مضى.
