يعد كتاب العروض للزجاج/ أبو اسحاق ابراهيم بن السَري الزجَاج (توفي سنة 311) من أقدم الكتب في علم العروض، وربما يكون الأخفش هو أول من ألف كتاباً في العروض يتداوله الناس وذلك في أوائل القرن الثاني أو أوائل القرن الثالث للهجرة، لذلك سلك الزجَاج في تأليف كتابه هذا نفس المنهج الذي سلكه الأخفش فتتيع مسلكه ونسج على منواله وهو ما يجده القارئ في باب الساكن والمتحرك وباب جمع الساكن والمتحرك، حيث استخدم الزجَاج نفس أمثلة الأخفش ونفس طريقته في الشرح... إلا أن المتتبع لكتابه العروض سيجد أيضاً ما يعارض فيه كلام الأخفش بل ويصل في ذلك إلى حد تغليطه وهو ما يورده في باب ما يجوز في الشعر وما لا يجوز في الكلام، وكذلك في باب الهجاء وفي تفسيره للخرم في البحر الطويل، وهو في كل ذلك يورد الحجة على ما يقول ولا يخالف لمجرد الخلاف فقط. وهو ما أجاد في شرحه لنا "سليمان أحمد أبو ستة" في تحقيقه وتهذيبه لهذه النسخة الواحدة والنادرة لكتاب العروض للزجَاج الموجودة في مكتبة جار الله أفندي باستانبول كما يشير في تعريفه لهذا الكتاب.
