إن منظومة الآداب الشرعية الصغرى للإمام العلامة الفقيه المحدث النحوي الأديب محمد بن عبد القوي المرداويّ، ومع صغر حجمها، قد حوت من الفوائد والأحكام الشرعية التي يحتاجها المسلم لإصلاح دنياه وآخرته ما هو عظيم القدر عميم النفع، غير أنها لم تلق من العناية مع ما يتناسب والحاجة إليها. من هنا كان الدافع قوياً لدى المحقق للاشتغال بها. حيث عمد إلى إجراء مقابلة على نسختين لها (إحداهما مطبوعة والأخرى مخطوطة)، وضبط يقيم أوزان أبياتها.
هذا ولما كان النظم يحتاج في الغالب إلى حلّ وشرح، لذا اتجه المحقق إلى تقديم شرح مختصر يعين الراغب في حفظها على سرعة فهمها، والاستفادة منها من خلال تبيين أفكارها والتدليل لأحكامها، معتمداً في ذلك على مختصر الإمام محمد بن أحمد السفاريني، والمسمى "غذاء الألباب في شرح منظومة الآداب". وقد زاد المحقق على مختصر الشرح المذكور، ما دعت الحاجة إلى ذلك، من الفوائد والإضافات، الأمر الذي أضفى على عمله صيغة شرح جديدة.
هذا وقد حاول المحقق قدر الإمكان في كتابة هذا الشرح المختصر الالتزام بالمنهج التالي: أولاً، جمع الأبيات ذات المعنى المشترك، لأن ذلك يساعد على الفهم وعلى سرعة الحفظ. ثانياً، فصل شرح الكلمات الغريبة على المعنى الإجمالي؛ وذلك تفادياً للتشويش في ذهن القارئ. ثالثاً، الاقتصار على ما له ارتباط مباشر بالنظم، دون التعرض للفوائد والقصص والأشعار التي أوردهما الشارح في الأصل. رابعاً، عدم التعرض للأقوال المخالفة لما ذكره الناظم، إلا إذا كان المعتمد في المذهب غيرها، حينئذ يذكر ذلك معزواً إلى مصدره. خامساً، الاكتفاء بذكر أقوى الأدلة على ما ورد في النظم من آداب شرعية، وأحكام فقهية، إلا إذا كان في الزيادة تأكيد معنى، أو إيضاحه، أو تقييده.
