"عيون الليل ترمقني، تؤرقني، وترجعني مع الذكرى إلى وطني، وما وطني سوى شعب وأرض، عاش منذ بداية التاريخ بالمحن، لرسم لوحة الإسراء والمعراج بالشهداء، في واديه والمنفى على جنح من الشجن". في هذا الديوان من صور فنية يسقطها الشاعر بصدق ومعنوية على واقع يعيشه ويتحسس عذاباته منذ أن كان في العراق وبالتحدي في مسقط رأسه "البصرة". ولذا نراه يخاطب حبيبته البعيدة ويسمعها آهات وطنه الذبيح، ويريها صور المعاناة التي حولت كل شيء حتى الشمس والمياه، وإلى كابوس يسكنه الفجر، وهذا الواقع المؤلم قد فرض وجوده على الشاعر "ضياء جمال الدين"، وجعله يهمس في شعره وخواطره بأنه "في مأزق".
