• تلقى تعليمه الأول على يد جده الشيخ محمد النبهان وكبار علماء حلب.
• حصل على الإجازة في الشريعة من جامعة دمشق والماجستير والدكتوراه من كلية دار العلوم بجامعة القاهرة
• درّس في جامعة الإمام وجامعة الملك سعود في الرياض 1966 1970.
• درّس في كلية الحقوق بجامعة الكويت 1970 - 1977.
• شارك في الدروس الحسينية بالمغرب.
• عيّنه الملك الحسن الثاني مديراً لدار الحديث الحسنيّة في المغرب 1977 - 2000.
• عضو الأكاديمية الملكية المغربية منذ عام 1984 ونشر بحوثاً في مجلتها.
• عضو المجمع الملكي لبحوث الحضارة الإسلامية في عمّان.
•
أشرف على عدد كبير من أطروحات الدكتوراه في الجامعات المغربية.
• أصدر مجلة دار الحديث الحسنيّة وكان يرأس تحريرها.
• عضو مجلس جامعة القرويين , وعضو لجان الترقية العلمية في عدد من الجامعات.
• عضو اللجنة العليا لجائزة الملك محمد السادس للفكر الإسلامي , وشارك في لجان جائزة الملك فيصل العالمية.
• أستاذ زائر في عدد من الجامعات العربية وشارك في عدد من المؤتمرات العلمية , ومنها مؤتمرات المجلس الأعلى للشؤون الإسلامية بالقاهرة.
• نشر عدداً من البحوث العلمية في مجلة العربي والفيصل , والأمة , ودراسات الخليج , ومجلة القضاء , ومجلة الأكاديمية , ومجلة دار الحديث , ومجلات أخرى.
