يعد حقل دراسات اليهوديات ( السامية ) حقلاً مهماً من حقول الدراسات التاريخية ، وقد أولى الغربيون وبالذات الباحثون من اليهود هذا الأمر حيزاً مهماً من خلال دراسة تاريخ بني إسرائيل، أو ما يعرف بالدراسات السامية . وأول ما يشرع باحث ما بدراسة التاريخ اليهودي حتى تصدمه مقولة لأحد المختصين البارزين في تاريخ الشرق الأوسط مفادها : (( نجد النهج اللاتاريخي نفسه في الحاخامية اليهودية ويهودية الشتات ، وعند استعراض ما كتب عن التاريخ اليهودي في العالم العربي والإسلامي تبين أمران أولهما تأخر اهتمام الباحثين بذلك المجال ، والثاني قلة ما كتب من قبل أولئك الباحثين عن التاريخ اليهودي وما كتب معظمه إما عن الجوانب العقدية لبني إسرائيل وأنبيائهم ، ويندرج تحت التاريخ القديم . أو الجوانب الأخرى التي كتب بها في التاريخ الحديث فقد شملت الصهيونية ممثلة بالكيان الصهيوني المزعوم في أرض فلسطين ، وحتى هذه لا تمثل إلا نسبة ضئيلة مقارنة لما يكتب في الغرب ، أما ما يخص الحقبة الإسلامية فلا يختلف عن غيره فقد كان السبق فيه للكتاب الغربيين ، الأمر الذي أوجد لديهم أقساماً متخصصة على صعيد البحث التاريخي . أما في العالم الإسلامي وتحديداً العربي منه فهناك ندرة واضحة فيما كتب عن تاريخ اليهود تحت ظل الحكم الإسلامي ، وسيدرك القارئ ذلك عندما يطلع على قائمة المراجع في نهاية البحث . ولعل ندرة الدراسات مردها يعود إلى ندرة المعلومات التي أوردتها المصادر التاريخية والبلدانية والتراجم وغيرها ، وكذلك عائق اللغة التي يحتاج إليها الباحث لكون معظم ما كتب كان باللغة الانكليزية والعبرية وغيرهما من اللغات الأجنبية .
