يقدم هذا الكتاب تفسيراً جديداً للعقل كظاهرة إنبثاقية، نشأت من وجود خمس خصائص بشرية لا توجد إلا في الإنسان، وتميزه من سائر الحيوان، وهي:
1-النمو الإستثنائي للقشرة الحديثة للدماغ البشري.
2-البنية الفراغية ثلاثية الأبعاد للحنجرة، وللثنيتين الصوتيتين.
3-تقابلية إبهام اليد مع الأصابع الأخرى.
4-إنتصاب القامة.
5-القانون الأخلاقي.
وبعد أن يدرس المؤلف تنامي الدماغ البشري، وبنية القشرة الحديثة، وآلية النقل العصبي، يوضح لماذا يتألف هذا الدماغ نسيجياً من مئة مليار خلية فقط؛ أي أقل بعشرين مرة فيما لو نُسب ورزنه إلى وزن جسم الإنسان، وعدد خلايا هذا الجسم (مئة ألف مليار خلية).
ويُبَيِّنُ أنَّ سبب ذلك يرجع إلى كثرة المشابك العصبية (مليون مليار مشبك)، وإلى غزارة الوصلات العصبية (مئة مليون مليار وصلة)، والتي تعمل كدارات الحاسوب، وذلك على حساب عدد الخلايا.
ويوضح المؤلف أنَّ العقل وُهب إلى الإنسان هبة من خالقه، ولم يصل إليه بالإنتقاء الجيني (الإنتقاء الطبيعي)، كما تعتقد الداروينية، ويؤكد المؤلف، بناءً على المعطيات الحديثة للأحفوريات البشرية (انظر كتابٌ "أصل الإنسان"، دار الفكر، للمؤلف)، أن الخط التطوري للإنسان مستقل تماماً، منذ سنة ملايين عام، عن الخط التطوري للقردة الحالية، وييبين، خلافاً لما أكده "داروين"، أنَّ الإنسان ليس مجرد قرد ذي دماغ ضخم.
