تحكي هذه الرواية قصة تيريزا الجميلة وسيماؤ المندفع، والخلافات المستمرة بين عائلتيهما التي تقف حاجزاً أمام حبّهما وتمنع زواجهما، بيْد أن العشق الذي يحرّكهما، والذي يزداد قوة مع تضافر العقبات والصعوبات، سرعان ما يؤدّي بهما وبأقاربهما إلى دوّامة مصير مأساوي تعبثْ به يد القدر.
فتتوالى الأحداث، بين مواعيد سرية، وعزلة في الدير، وجرائم قتل، وكمائن إنتقام... أحداث تجعل من هذه الرواية نصاً كلاسيكياً يندرج ضمن روائع الأدب الأوروبي في القرن التاسع عشر.
