يجد الدارس لحضارة وادي الرافدين صعوبة الفصل بين التاريخ الأشوري والتاريخ العام لهذه الحضارة نظرا للتماثل الكبير بين مختلف المظاهر الحضارية لهذا البلد لكن دراسة الحقبة المبكر في تاريخ أشور تشكل ضرورة ملحة من اجل استيعاب الاصول الاولى للحضارة الاشورية التي تتسم بالصعوبة البالغة من متابعتها اذ إن دراسة هذه الحقبة تصطدم بعقبات كبيرة فعلى العكس من الجنوب الذي وصلنا منه كتابات غزيرة سواء نصوص تاريخية (قوائم ملوك، كتابات ملكية، نصوص نذرية)، أو نصوص أدبية (أساطير ، ملامح، مراثي، أدب مدرسي) أو نصوص قانونية ( عقود اقتصادية ، عقود زواج ، قوائم جرايات ، نصوص إصلاحات) ، أو نصوص دينية ( تراتيل ، أدعية ، قوائم بأسماء الآلهة) التي تقدم مادة غنية ومهمة للباحث في العصور المبكرة لبلاد سومر ولكن في بلاد أشور فان الامر مختلف ففي العصور المبكرة لا سيما في عصر فجر السلالات (Early Dynasticperiodd) فإننا لا نمتلك أي وثائق من اجل بناء تصور واضح حتى لو كان جزئيا عن بلاد أشور.
