لا أحد يملك سر البدايات ولا يملك تحديد النهايات. نعيش بقدر وننتهي بأجل. هذه معادلة تقود إلى ما يحدث في حياة الناس .. وهي نفسها ستقودنا إلى ما يحدث في حياة "حسين" بطل رواية جهاد عبد الإله الخنيزي، الأخ الأصغر ضمن تسعة، رحل منهم ثلاثة إلى العالم الآخر، وكانت فاطمة الأم المفجوعة بأولادها الذيني يتساقطون أمام عينيها وكأنها تفقد توهجاً من روحها مع كل واحد منهم، حتى لقبها الناس بالصبورة ... كانت تبكي عند قراءة مصائب آل البيت وتمزج دموع آل البيت بدموعها على أولادها. وظلت طوال وقتها في قلق وتخص حسين بنظرات خائفة، فقررت أن يعيش حياته بعيداً عما حوله، فأرسلته إلى أمريكا للدراسة، لتخفي عنه أمر إصابتها بمرض عُضال "السرطان". وبعد وفاتها كانت الأخوات البنات هن ملجأ حسين في الحياة، فبدأن بالبحث له عن زوجة، ولكن حسين كان يريد زوجة تشبه أمه "فاطمة" لأنه كان يعتقد بأن فاطمة موجودة في كل النساء، ثم اكتشف أن فاطمة (الأم) لا تتكرر فأصابه يأس وقنوط وعزوف عن الزواج ...
هذا الواقع جعل من حسين يبحث عن ذاته في مكان آخر هو عالم الروح معتقداً "بأن كل شيء هو اختبار للنفس والروح والعقل وهو الذي يحدد هويتك وفوزك وفشلك ويحدد مصير حياتك الأخرى". لقد رأى حسين السعادة مع فعل الخير فبدأ في محاولة يعيد من خلالها سيرة والده وأمه وطريقته الخاصة. وهي سيرة أجداده الذين سمع عنهم ممن حوله وكانوا فاعلي خير وبدأ يقول لنفسه: "أستطيع أن أكون حسن علي مرة ثانية، أن أكون علي بن مهدي ومحمد بن حسين مرة ثانية" وهنا يحدث تحول في الشخصية باتجاه الروحانيات وعالم الغيب والآخرة، حتى استقر حسين كشافاً ورحّالاً هدفه أن يعرف سرّ الحياة التي يتواجد فيها، يطرح أسئلة، وينتظر أجوبة ...
هذه النقاط تقاطعاً وافتراقاً جرى التعبير عنها بلغة روائية سردية ترتبط بالمخيلة الشعبية، وبالفكر الفلسفي، والخطاب الديني. وبهذا يغطي الروائي البعدين الزماني والمكاني في عالم الرواية.
