روسيا عام 1561، القيصر إيفان الرابع (الرهيب) هو وحش سادي، وهو كذلك مثقف، متدين روع، مريض بالفصام والتشكيك ومهووس جنسياً، وإيفان يخوض حرباً، بولندا - ليثوانيا، أعداؤه في الغرب وتتار القرم، أعداؤه إلى الجنوب، يهددون بتفكيك الإمبراطورية الهشة التي يحاول إيفان أن يجمِّعها بواسطة مزيج من القوة الغاشمة، الدبلوماسية والزواج.
لكن أسوأ أعداؤه هم من الروس، عشيرتان من الأمراء، اليورييف والستاريتسكي يتآمرون ضد القيصر - وعلى بعضهما بعضاً - لبذر الشقاق بين الطبقة الأرستقراطية وتوفير الدعم للقيام بإنقلاب.
لكن لدى القيصر سلاح سري - زوجته الثانية - ماريا، الجميلة، الشغوفة الشركسية القادمة من القفقاس، تقسم على الولاء لإيفان وحده، وهما مغرمان ببعضهما بعضاً، برغم مؤامرات الكرملين وخيانات إيفان المتكررة، توسع روسيا حدودها تحت حكم إيفان وماريا، وتدخل آلة الطباعة وتبني إقتصاداً قوياً يربط الشرق الأقصى مع أوروبا.
يمكن رؤيتها من إحدى الزوايا على أنها قصة حب غريبة بين الأميرة الشركسية لعائلة تيمروقه من القفقاس، والقيصر إيفان الرابع، ومن الناحية الأخرى هي تمثل إكتشافات لحقائق تاريخية حول ماريا (جواشنه)، والتي شوهها التاريخ الروسي بسبب التحامل ضد أميرة أجنبية كانت تمثل ثقافة غريبة عن الأرثوذكسية السلافية المتعصبة.
لقد دون رهبان وقساوسة الكنيسة جميع الأحداث العائدة للحقبة، وتم تأسيس كامل تاريخ تلك السنوات على مثل تلك المخطوطات، لذلك فإن التحامل في علم التاريخ الروسي التالي ضد الأميرة ماريا أمر لا محيص عنه إبتداء بنيستور وكارامزين والمؤرخين المتلاحقين الروس المحدثين والمؤرخين الغربيين.
هذه هي القصة التي لم تروى قبلاً للأميرة ماريا تيمروقوﭬنا (جواشنه) وحكمها الذي استمر سبع سنوات كإمبراطورة لروسيا.
