كتاب "موسيقى الشعر العربي قديمه وحديثه" هو أول كتاب منهجي في موسيقى الشعر يجمع بين شعر الشطرين والشعر الحر، ويختلف تبويباً عما هو مألوف في كتب العروض الأخرى. ومن المعروف بأن معظم الدراسات العروضية تكون مقتصرة على إيقاع الشطرين. أما الشعر الحر، فلا تضعه في حساباتها، وهذا الاقتصار يسبب نقصاً معرفياً لدى الطالب والباحث لا بد من تلافيه. لذا ارتأى الدكتور عبد الرضا علي في كتابه هذا دراسة عروض الشعر الحر مع عروض شعر الشطرين على صعيد واحد، متوصلاً إلى طريقة جديدة في تبويب مادة العروض، بأن تمّ درس إيقاع كل وزن في شعر الشطرين للانتقال من ثم إلى ما كان منه في الشعر الحرّ. فإذا كان من الأوزان المطردة استخداماً تمت الإشارة إلى أسباب ذلك، وإن كان الوزن ممتنعاً أشير إليه. مع الوقوف على التجارب التي حاولت تطويع بعض البحور المركبة وجعلها مقبولة في الشعر الحرّ، كالطويل والبسيط، والخفيف. فالمدرس الذي يتصدى لتدريس بحر من البحور الشعرية، سيتسنى ومن خلال هذا الكتاب له أن يقدم الدرس كاملاً، إذ سيبدأ بشعر الشطرين، ثم ينتهي إلى إيقاع الشعر الحرّ في الوزن نفسه، وهذا مما لم يتحه للمتلقي كتاب سابق.
وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن المؤلف قدم أمثلة شعرية معاصرة، فضلاً عن نماذج من شعر القدامى والمتأخرين لأن الدارس يحتاج أن يكون على تماس مباشر مع نتاج المبدعين الذين يشاركونه عصره، ويسهمون في رسم صورة مستقبل الثقافة في وطنه. ولا بد من القول بأن هذا الكتاب إنما هو محاولة لتقديم كتاب ينتفع به الدارس والقارئ والباحث، ويسدّ ثغرة في المكتبة العربية. ويتيح لأبناء هذا الجيل الوقوف على موسيقى الشعر العربي قديمه وحديثه.
