لعلّ السؤال الذي يتبادر، على الفور، إلى ذهن قارئ عنوان هذا الكتاب هو: ما الحاجة إلى كتاب عن تاريخ العروبة في حين أن المكتبة العربيّة تعجّ يكتب كثيرة حول هذا الموضوع؟...
والجواب موجود في العنوان الفرعي لهذا الكتاب، والذي يصف الفصول الثمانية، المتنوعة والموجودة بين دفتيه، بأنها "قراءات نقديّة في هوامش الزمان والمكان".
ويوضح هذا الوصف أنها، أولاً، نقدية أي ليست تبجيلية أو إعتذارية، بل تتبنّى موقفاً نقديّاً تجاه النظرات السائدة - القوميّة منها وغير القوميّة - لتاريخ العروبة؛ وهي: ثانياً، قراءة في الهوامش أي تسعى إلى إبراز ما يتم إعتبار هامشيّاً عند النظر إلى تاريخ العروبة.
وهذا الإختيار المنهجي يهدف إلى تحقيق أمرين: الأول، تحدّي السردية الرسمية لتاريخ العروبة التي تختزلها، مكانياً، في مصر والهلال الخصيب، وزمانياً في الفترة الممتدة من حرب 1948م إلى حرب الخليج الثانية (بحيث يعتبر ما قبلها مجرّد مقدّمات وتمهيد لها).
ولهذا السبب، كانت، ثالثاً، قراءة في هوامش المكان (دول الجزيرة العربية والسودان)، وهوامش الزمان (كمصر قبل عبد الناصر، وسوريا قبل حافظ الأسد)، لهذه الأسباب كلها تعتقد أن الكتاب يسدّ ثغرة في المكتبة العربيّة، ويقدّم إضافة مهمّة.
إن الهمّ الرئيس الذي يحرّك هذا الكتاب، وهم همّ تعكسه حقيقة أن كلّ كتّابه من جيلٍ جديد، يريد مخاطبة مجايليه بحيث يقدّم لهم رؤيته لتاريخ العروبة، وكيف يراها، ثم يطرح رؤاه وأفكاره على طاولة النقاش.
إن هذا الهمّ ينطلق من إيمان حقيقي بأن أيّ حل لمشاكل المنطقة العربية لا بد من أن يكون حلاً عربيّاً، بمعنى أن جانباً رئيساً منه يجب أن يكون مرتبطاً ومتعلّقاً بالهويّة العربيّة، وكنوع من المساهمة في العمل نحو بلورته، تقدّم هذا الكتاب الذي يفتّش في ماضي العروبة عن الدروس والعبر، ولا يحاول التنصّل من تاريخها، أو يتعامى عنه، أو يصنّمه ويقدّسه، بل يقرّ أن هناك تركة تاريخية لهذه الفكرة، وأن أي محاولة لتقديمها كجزء من حلول المنطقة اليوم لا بد من أن تبدأ بتقديم تصوّر نقدي لتاريخها، تصوّر تطرح فيه رؤى نقدية لا تعجب المؤدلجين سواء من المتعصبين للكفرة أو المتعصبين ضدها.
