"وبينما كنت جالساً وحيداً في غرفتي سمعت صوت المؤذن قد ارتفع يدعو الناس للصلاة إلى الله وكانت أنوار المدينة تسطع والناس يلهون ويقضون الساعات الأخيرة من الليل في المرح الذي يغمرهم. أصغيت لصوت المؤذن وكان شجياً حلواً وكانت كلماته ظاهرة مفهومة إذ كان المسجد قريباً مني، فسمعته يقول في وضوح وخشوع: الله أكبر، أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله، أشهد أن محمداً رسول الله، حي على الصلاة، حي على الفلاح، الله أكبر لا إله إلا الله.
ورأيت القوم يتهافتون على المسجد للابتهال إلى الله الذي كتب لهم لهم الظفر وأعاد لهم حريتهم المسلوبة كاملة غير ناقصة، وليس أحق من الله بالشكر والحمد".
هكذا وصف لورنس ساعاته الأخيرة في دمشق بعد انتصار الثورة العربية الكبرى قبل أن يغادرها وهي مستقلة، وعلى رأسها صاحب الجلالة الملك فيصل بطل الثورة العربية الكبرى، تلك الساعات التي جاءت نتيجة أيام طويلة تعج بالقتال والأحداث الكبيرة والتي يحدثنا عنها لورنس بالتفصيل في مذكراته التي بين يديك عزيزي القارئ بأسلوب يجعلك تعيشها لحظة بلحظة.
