يحكي هذا الكتاب قصص أسرى الحرب من ضباط الحلفاء الذين وقعوا في الأسر بيد الألمان في الحرب العالمية الثانية، كان الألمان يحشرون الأسرى في معسكرات منتشرة في جميع أرجاء ألمانيا في قلاع أو حصون رهيبة كولدتز هي إحدى هذه المعسكرات. وهي بناء شامخ وحصين فوق جرف هار، فيها أسوار عالية، محاطة بأسلاك شائكة وبحندق عريض. فيها من الحراس ما يفوق على عدد الأسرى، مزودين بكلاب بوليسية. تتسلط عليها الأنوار الكاشفة ليلاً بحيث تصير كالنهار. وعلى هذا الأساس أيقن الألمان من أنه لا يجرأ أي فرد على محاولة الهرب منها، ولكنهم فاتهم المثل القائل "همم الرجال تقلع الجبال" سيجد القارئ الكريم في ثنايا هذا الكتاب قصصاً واقعية هي أقرب للخيال منه للواقع، وهي قصص ممتعة وشيقة لا تخلو من فائدة، جمعها أحد الأسرى الذين تمكنوا من الخلاص من هذا المعسكر الرهيب وسمى هذه الأعمال بـ"مكائد الأسرى" لأنهم كانوا يدبرون أعمالهم ليلاً في الوقت الذي كان يغط فيه سكان المعسكر في نوم عميق.
