علم النفس الفسيولوجي هو أحد فروع العلم البينية Interdisciplinary التي تقع على حدود علمين مستقلين هما علم النفس وعلم الأعصاب، وتدلنا مسيرة المعرفة أن التقدم العلمي هو ثمرة لقوتين متفاعلتين؛ التخصص داخل التخصص من ناحية، والتكامل من بين هذه التخصصات من ناحية أخرى في حركة دائمة لا تنتهي.
وهذا تحديداً هو موقع علم النفس الفسيولوجي كعلم يكامل بين تخصصين: علم النفس وعلم فسيولوجيا الأعصاب، ولكن بدلاً من حدوث هذا التكامل حدث تجاهل على الأقل من جانب علماء النفس، ومن هنا أصبح علم النفس الفسيولوجي على هامش بؤرة إهتمام المتخصصين في علم النفس.
ولا أدل على ذلك من أن أقسام علم النفس في مصر لا تدرس هذا الفرع إلا كمقرر واحد على مدار السنوات الأربع لطلبة التخصص... أو ليس هذا نوعاً من التجاهل؟...
نحن نعرف أن السلوك الإنساني يتشكل من مصدرين رئيسين هما البيئة الخارجية بما تحويه من مثيرات فيزيقية ومثيرات إجتماعية، والبيئة الداخلية أو الجانب الفسيولوجي وخاصة الجهاز العصبي وجهاز الغدد الصماء، وعلى هذا، أفلا يكون من الأجدر إحداث نوع من التوازن في الإهتمام بكلا الجانبين؟...
وقد يقول قائل إن الإنسان كائن إجتماعي بطبيعته، هذا صحيح، ولكن بدون معرفة كافية بما يعتمل داخل الإنسان لن نستطيع أن نحصل على فهم متكامل عن السلوك الإنساني.
يتميز هذا الكتاب بالتبسيط غير المخل، فقد تحاشى الدخول في تفاصيل كثيرة - غالباً ما تتعلق بالجانب الفسيولوجي البحت - مع الإحتفاظ في الوقت نفسه بالدقة العلمية في الصياغة، وبذلك جنب القارئ تفاصيل قد تمثل عنتاً ومشقة في متابعتها.
والكتاب مفيد للمهتمين بمجال علم النفس الإكلينيكي والإرشاد والعلاج النفسي، فضلاً عن المهتم بعلم النفس والعلوم ذات الصلة به بصورة عامة، كما أنه يفيد القارئ المثقف غير المتخصص.
