في الإقليم الجنوبي من بلاد العرب: اليمن قامت حضارة يعود اقدم ما بلغ من أخبارها إلى القرن العاشر أو الحادي عشر قبل الميلاد حضارة جذبت إليها أنظار العالم القديم، وأثرت فيه وتأثرت به، وبلغت من ذيوع الصيت ما جعل الكتاب الكلاسيكيين من أمثال ستربو وبليني وبطليموس يتحدثون عنها بكثير من الإعجاب والانبهار.
ففي تلك العهود عاشت على مسرح الحوادث في العربية السعيدة ممالك في فترات متداخلة ومتعاقبة هي معين وقتبان وحضرموت وسبأ، ومملكة لم تظهر هويتها لحاملة بعد، هي تلك التي كانت تدهي أوسان. وكانت تلك الممالك على الأغلب، متعاصرة متعاونة أو متنافسة متناحرة. كل واحدة منها تستقل بنفسها تارة، وتدين بالولاء لبعض جاراتها تارة أخرى. ولا يمزمع هذا الكتاب لأن يؤرخ لتلك الممالك وإنما غايته هو إعطاء صورة عامة تلك الحضارة العربية القديمة التي قامت في اليمن: في البداية قام المؤلف باستعراض بعض المسائل المتعلقة بأهم ما وصل من أخبار عن تلك الممالك كمملكة أوسان، معين، قتبان، حضرموت، سبأ... بعد ذلك أرخ لبعض جوانب الحضارة اليمنية القديمة فتحدث عن اليمن واكسوم، البخور، والطرق التجارية، كما وتطرق للديانة التي كانت سائدة في اليمن القديم.
