هذا الكتاب هو عبارة عن دراسة لــ "مقدمة الكتاب في التراث الإسلامي"، من بداية التأليف في تاريخ الإسلام إلى بداية النهضة العربية الحديثة، ومحاولة لتحديد مفهومها وإبراز مكوِّناتها، مع التركيز على جزئية واحدة من هذه المكوِّنات؛ وهي التي تتعلق بحديث المؤلف عن طبيعة ما قدمه إلى قُرّائه؛ أهو جديد لم يسبق إليه، أم هو مما تعارف عليه أهل التأليف قبله؟ وحديث المؤلف عن مدى جِدّة ما يُقدمه؛ هو ما أراه جوهرياً في كل مقدمة علمية؛ أكان ذلك في القديم أم في الحديث؛ وهو المشار إليه بــ "هاجس الإبداع" في عنوان هذا الكتاب.
والغاية في هذا الكتاب، الكشف عما تمايز به خطاب المقدمات في كتاب التراث الإسلامي، وما يطرحه ذلك الخطاب من قضايا، وما تعرف عنه تلك المقدمات من تصورات منهجية تخص التأليف في حضارة الإسلام، وتبين منحنيات الإبداع فيه، وذلك بالتركيز على هاجس الإبداع في مقاصد المؤلفين.
وهذا الكتاب أيضاً، يلفت نظر قارئه إلى ما في مقدمة الكتاب في تراث الإسلام، من إحساس صاحبه بقيمة التأليف الذي أتى به، من حيث جِدته وما حقق فيه من سبّق في مجاله المعرفي الخاص.
