إن هذا الكتاب هو تعريف بأول كتاب ألّف في الإسلام، وتعريف بمؤلفه "سليم بن قيس الهلالي الثقة العين صاحب أمير المؤمنين رضي الله عنه" وتوثيق علمي بأول ناقل للكتاب وهو الزاهد العابد الثقة "أبان بن أبي عياش". ووفقاً لمحقق الكتاب، فإن هذا الكتاب هو عصارة مهجة "سليم بن قيس الهلالي" والذي ضحى بكل ما عنده، وبكل حياته من أجل أن تصل حقائق – أهل البيت – إلينا. إن "الشيخ الزنجاني الأنصاري" الذي حقق الكتاب تحقيقاً استحق أن ينال جائزة "أفضل كتاب السنة" لعام 1373 هجري قد بذل حهده في تحقيقه وإخراجه محققاً لا يصيبه سهام التشكيك.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب سعى السيد جلال السيد جمال الحسيني إلى دراسته وتحقيقه ووضعه تحت عنوان "أمهر صحفي في زمان الفتنة"، وقد أخرج لنا الحقائق بأسلوب قصصي يناسب شباب العصر لأنه يسهل الفهم ولا يحتاج إلى تخصص معين، فهو مفيد لكل المستويات العلمية ومختلف الأعمار، والمذاهب والعقائد لأن هدفه الحقيقة ولا شيء غيرها.
والكتاب في مضمونه هو بيان لعقائد الشيعة الإمامية ونظرتها إلى أصول وفروع الدين، ما عدا التفسير لأحاديث الفتن، وما جاء في كتب الرجال من حقائق، وكل ما يتعلق بموضوع (الإمامة) وأحقيتها وشيء من عالم الآخرة.
توزع الكتاب إلى ثلاثة وستين فصلاً نذكر منها: "أصحاب التابوت" ، "سليم من علماء الشيعة" ، "تدوين الحقائق" ، "سليم وأحداث السقيفة" ، "سليم رجل السين والقل" (...) وعناوين ذات صلة.
