وهكذا تبدأ قصة زفايغ؛ كان الروائي الشهير في عطلة قصيرة في الجبال، ثم عاد إلى شقته في فيينا، ووجد عدداً من الرسائل في انتظاره، فتح واحدة أو اثنتين من هذه الرسائل. ثم ترك جانباً مغلفاً ثخيناً مكتوباً بخط غريب، من دون إسم المرسل وعنوانه. لكنه ما لبث أن عاد إلى هذا المغلف، فوجده أشبه بمخطوطة، وليس برسالة، وشرع بقراءته بعد أن أشعل سيكاراً ...
