يرصد هذا الأطلس التاريخي أبرز الأحداث والوقائع التاريخية للمملكة العربية السعودية منذ بداية الدولة السعودية الأولى وحتى نهاية عهد الملك "عبد العزيز" رحمه الله، وهو مدعم بمجموعة من الخرائط والأشكال والصور الموضحة والتي يزيد عددها على المئة؛ ويتميز هذا الأطلس بخرائطه التفصيلية للأحداث التاريخية، ورصده لأهم المعالم الجغرافية المتعلقة بتلك الأحداث.
وقد روعي عند تصميم خرائط الأطلس إفراد خرائط عامة لتصوير الأحداث العامة في عهد كل إمام أو حاكم، او خلال الفترات الزمنية المتعددة، ثم تخصيص خرائط أخرى توضح الأحداث والوقائع التاريخية بشكل مفصل، وكذلك أفردت بعض الخرائط والمخططات لتوضيح بعض الأحداث التاريخية المهمة، وتفصيل أحداث بعض المعارك والوقائع.
وقد زودت الخرائط بشروحات مختصرة تعين القارئ على تفهم الأحداث التاريخية، وتتابعها الزمني بشكل صحيح، وكذلك ربطها والمقارنة فيما بينها.
وقد روعي عند إعداد خرائط الأطلس بتسلسل موضوعاتها زمنيّاً وفقاً لتتابع المراحل والأحداث والوقائع التاريخية التي مرت بها الدولة السعودية في مختلف مراحلها.
ولذلك وزعت الخرائط في ستة أقسام عامة، هي كالتالي: قسم هذا الأطلس إلى الأقسام العامة التالية:
-القسم الأول: "المقدمة".
-القسم الثاني: "الدولة السعودية الأولى".
-القسم الثالث: "الدولة السعودية الثانية".
-القسم الرابع: "المملكة العربية السعودية".
-القسم الخامس: "الجوانب الحضارية".
-القسم السادس: "الفهارس والمراجع".
