الواقع أن شاعراً كعبيد يستحق أن يدرس في عمل منفصل، يكشف لنا عن هذه الشخصية الأدبية لا سيما وأنها من أصحاب المعلقات، لذا فقد رأى المؤلف "أحمد موسى الجاسم" وضع هذه الدراسة ليرسم من خلالها صورة واضحة عن هذا الشاعر الكبير.
لذلك عمد إلى تقسيم دراسته إلى ثلاثة أبواب... خصص الباب الأول لنشأة الشاعر وحياته، وقسمه إلى أربعة فصول تعرض في الفصل الأول: منها لقبيلة الشاعر وبيئته، وعالج في الفصل الثاني: نشأة الشاعر وسيرته متفحصاً الروايات والأخبار التي وصلت إليه عن هذه الشخصية الأدبية المتميزة، وتطرق في الفصل الثالث: لشخصية الشاعر كما تبدو من شعره، وأما الفصل الرابع: فقد خصصه للمقارنة بينه وبين شعراء عصره.
وفي الباب الثاني درس المؤلف موضوعات شعره ومضمونها، وقد قسمه إلى ثلاثة فصول؛ تركز اهتمامه في الأول منها: على أهم أغراض شعر عبيد ودراستها بشكل موضوعي ووقف في الفصل الثاني: على دلالة شعره على بيئته ومدى الارتباط بين الشاعر وبين تلك البيئة بكل ما تحمله من قيم وعادات وتقاليد، وتوجه في الفصل الثالث: إلى دراسة أبرز صور البيئة في شعره دراسة نفسية وقد اقتصرت دراسته في هذا الفصل على ثلاث صور، صورة الطلل، والناقة والفرس ودار الباب الثالث في هذه الدراسة حول شعر عبيد من ناحية الشكل في محاولة لدراسته دراسة نقدية. مدلياً برأيه الخاص في العديد من المسائل التي تعرض لها.
