الإبل من أنفع الحيوانات في الصحارى والبلاد المتاخمة لها، ويرجع ذلك إلى قوة احتمالها وقدرتها الفائقة على تحمل الجوع، ولقد أخذت أهمية الجمال في الحضر كحيوان في الزراعة تتضاءل تدريجياً، ولا سيما في السنوات الأخيرة، ويرجع ذلك إلى التوسع المستمر في إنشاء الطرق واستخدام السيارات والعربات في النقل، فضلاً عن مكننة الزراعة، ولكن الجمال ما زالت تستخدم في نقل المحصولات من الحقول إلى المخازن ومن قرية إلى أخرى... كذلك من المألوف أن تستخدم الجمال في إدارة السواقي في الحقول التي تعجز قدرة أصحابها المالية عم مكننة الزراعة.
والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يأتي في إطار تقديم ترجمة لهذا الحيوان حيث يذكر بداية مزاياه وصفاته والتشريحية، بعد ذلك يعد مسمياته وطرق تغذيته مؤكداً على القواعد والاحتياطات العامة الواجب اتباعها في تغذيته، من ثم يذكر بأهمية الفيتامينات للإبل، كما يعدد مواد علف الإبل المركزة، هذا ولم ينس أن يلقي الضوء طرق استحمام الإبل، والأمراض التي تصيبها وسبل مكافحة هذه الأمراض، ومن التراث العربي يستعرض الكتاب العديد من الحكايات والقصص والألعاب الشعبية التي تؤكد على وفاء الهجين (الإبل).
