تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى بين أيدينا إلى طرح ما اتهم به ابن حزم من الجمود وضيق الأفق وعبادة النصوص ورفضه للقياس والتعليل والتأويل في التشريع، ومن ثمَّ رفضه للعقل، ومناقشته للتعرف إلى مدى صحة تلك الإتهامات أو بطلانها.
وقد انطلق المؤلف في ذلك من خلال كتابات ابن حزم نفسه وما جاء فيها من أفكار خاصة في كتبه: "التقريب لحد المنطق والمدخل إليه" و"طوق الحمامة" وكافة رسائله ومؤلفاته الأخرى الواردة بالمراجع.
وقد قسم الدراسة إلى ثلاثة إلى ثلاثة أبواب على النحو التالي: الباب الأول: "عصر ابن حزم وحياته ونتاجه"، وقد كان ابن حزم ابناً لعصره، انفعل به وتفاعل معه، أما الباب الثاني: فقد تناول "منهج ابن حزم في نقد العقل الأصولي" مبيناً المنهج الذي انتهجه ابن حزم في كل دراساته وهو "منهج العقل - النص" أو فلسفة النص، وإن كان الباحثون يطلقون عليه اسم المنهج الظاهري فقط، وقد تناول الباب الثاني هذا المنهج بالتفصيل اللازم ووضح الخطوات الثلاث التي يتكون منها، وهي: "منهج العقل الخالص"، و"منهج النص الخالص"، ثمَّ "منهج العقل - النص".
وجاء الباب الثالث بكامله ليكون دليلاً عملياً وتطبيقاً فعلياً لهذا المنهج بما فيه من نقد للعقل الأصولي المقلد، وقد هذا الباب الموضوعات الآتية: 1-التوحيد والإختلاف، 2-في متشابه القرآن الكريم، 3-ابن حزم وآراء الصحابة، 4-الحق والباطل في أقوال الفقهاء، 5-في الإحتياط وقطع الدرائع والمشتبه، 6-ضرورة أن يجتهد العامي، 7-في كيفية ظهور اللغات وأفضل اللغات ولغة أهل الجنة والنار، 8-في الغناء الملهي أمباح هو أم محظور؟، 9-عن المرأة ومكانتها، 10-في العمل والتوبة والمصير النهائي للإنسان.
