في هذه الرواية نقع على رجل يشير بحكة في باطن قدمه التي نبتت فيها جذوراً صغيرة خشنة مع رائحة لا تحتمل، وجلد حذائه الثخين يمنعه من حكه بأظافره، والحكة تؤاتيه مختلطة بكوابيسه، ومع ذلك كان يوهم نفسه بالحك بفرك جلده بأنامله، لكن الشيء الذي كان يقلقه أكثر أثر كل حكّة هو ما كانت تقوله جدته دائماً بأن "رحلة تنتظر كل من يصاب بحكة في باطن قدمه"، فما هي الرحلة التي تنتظر رجلاً فقد القدرة على خلع حذائه.
في هذه الرواية يقترح الكاتب عدنان عادل عوالم مغلقة موصدة الأبواب يشكل الأدب بالنسبة إليها أفقاً لردم الهوة بين الحقيقة والواقع؛ ولعل قراءة المقطع الآتي يوحي بشيء من المعنى أو القصد الذي أراد الكاتب بعثه إلى القارئ: "لم يبقَ شيء أقوله سوى أنني لم أستطع إنقاد أحد، فالعالم غرق في بحر الثرثرة وأنا الناجي الوحيد: اسمي عدنان من مواليد: بحر الشمال، بروكسل، غرناطة، بغداد، استنبول، مارسيليا، كركوك، صحراء القلب... لا أدري، فما الأرقام إلا محظيات والزمن قوادها، وأنا قد أكون ولدت أو أنني في طور الطيران، لكن من المؤكد أنني سقطت في الجوزاء أمرح مع نديمي بحرية حرة، وهناك دائماً شيء افتقده بقوة، وهذا وحده كان بأن لا أتزلق، للزمن ولأغتصب ما يصادفني، ومن أجله سأستمر بالقتل... والحكة ما زالت... والوجه ما زال ينتظر البصقة التي... أتيها البلاد انتظريني، فمن سيحكني غيرك؟!...
