بحملة نابليون العسكري على مصر، افتتحت فرنسا عهد الاستعمار الأوربي-الغربي المديد للعالم العربي-الإسلامي، تلك الحملة التي كانت بداية لسيل تلاها من الغزوات والحروب والصراعات اختلطت فيها الصليبية المستحكمة بروح الغرب وعقله بالنزعات العنصرية وطموحات الهيمنة الإمبراطورية.
فإذا كان غزو نابليون لمصر قد أتاح قياس الفارق التاريخي بين "تقدم" الأوربيين وتخلف العرب في مستويات الوجود الإنساني المختلفة، فإنها قد افتتحت في الوقت نفسه شهية الدول الاستعمارية الأوروبية لإنشاء امبراطوريات "فيما وراء البحار" وتنافس هذه الدول على الممتلكات السائبة التي لم تعد تجد من يحميها بتحول الإمبراطورية العثمانية إلى "الرجل المريض" ونشأة "المسألة الشرقية".
ومع احتلال فرنسا للجزائر، في عهد "نابليون الثالث"، انتقل المشروع الاستعماري الغربي إلى شكل أكثر دموية وعنفاً امتاز باستملاك الأرض وإبادة "البسكان" وما رافقهما من نزوع عنصري لعب دور الغطاء الإيديوولجي المبرر للمطامع الاستعمارية.
وقد شهد المشروع الاستعماري الإمبراطوري اكتماله مع دقات طبول الحرب العالمية الأولى والتواطؤ الفرنسي-الإنكليزي المشهود في اتفاقيات سايكس-بيكو ووعد بلفور واقتسام الوطن العربي من قبل الأطراف المنتصرة في الحرب، مما سرح للدول الغربية بإقامة "إسرائيل" التي أريد لها أن تكون اليد الطولى للغرب في قمع المشروع العربي في الوحدة والتحرر والتقدم.
في هذا الكتاب، يرصد المؤلف العلاقات التناحرية بين الغرب الاستعماري وبين العالم العربي-الإسلامي، بين شمال المتوسط والجنوب، من خلال تقص تاريخي دقيق على امتداد قرنين منذ ولادة الحلم الاستعماري الفرنسي زمن نابليون حتى لحظتنا الراهنة التي نشهد فيها تجدد طموحات الدول الاستعمارية الغربية ومن ضمنها فرنسا في ظل ميتران.
