يتناول البحث وجهات النظر المختلفة لدى المسيحيين اللبنانيين بخصوص العلاقات بين المسيحيين والمسلمين في لبنان، أي بخصوص "العيش المشترك" ومشاكله الحاضرة وآفاقه المستقبلية، ما هو كائن وما ينبغي أن يكون من وجهة نظر مسيحية، والفترة المختارة هي فترة ما بعد الحرب، أي ما بعد مؤتمر الطائف وعودة السلم الأهلي إلى البلاد، مع إشارات إلى فترة الحرب وما قبلها كضرورة لاستكمال الصورة وتتبع تطور الأمور. كما تجنب البحث الخوض في المسائل التعريفية للبنان من حيث التاريخ والجغرافية والطوائف... على أساس أنها مسائل معروفة تناولتها مراجع عديدة، ويفترض في القارئ الإلمام بها ولو بشكل عام.
والمقاربة المنهجية في البحث يمكن تسميتها "إنسانية اجتماعية"، تعتمد أساساً أسلوب المقابلات الشخصية والزيارات الميدانية. "اجتماعية" لأنها تعتمد اللقاء المباشر بالناس، و"إنسانية" لأنها تعنى بالخبرة الحياتية المعاشة. فلا يقصد من المقابلات إجراء سبر إحصائي للآراء، فتلك طريقة تتبعها بعض المؤسسات المختصة ولها تقنياتها العلمية الخاصة، حدةد المستطاع قام المؤلف بمقابلة أشخاص تحدثوا عن تجاربهم وخبراتهم ووجهات نظرهم. فكان المنهج المختار هو حسن الاستماع جمعاً لأهم الآراء الرائجة في الساحة اللبنانية المسيحية، مع تركيز خاص على المؤسسات والأشخاص ذوي الصلة بالعلاقات الإسلامية المسيحية.
