حظيت القراءات القرآنية بعناية المسلمين منذ مطلع القرن الأول للهجرة، وتعهدوا النشأة الأولى بالرعاية، حتى استوت علماً من العلوم المستقلة، له متخصصوه ومريدوه، ونال هذا العلم من الدرس والتأليف شأواً بعيداً، ولا سيما أن أركان ضوابطه وشروطه قد ثبتت في أرض صلبة، قوامها: مطابقة الرسم، وموافقة العربية، والتواتر.
وبذلك كان هذا العلم منهجياً في بواكيره، وقد دارت عليه التآليف والمصنفات منذ العقد الأخير من القرن الأول الهجري، ولم تكن تلك المظان الأولى لتختص بسبعة قراء أو عشرة قراء كما حدث بعدئذ، حتى جاء ابن مجاهد، واختار سبعة من القراء المجمع على عدالتهم في النقل، وهم من الأقطار التي وجّه عثمان رضي الله عنه مصاحف إليهم، ثم تلت ابن مجاهد مرحلة التفريد والتسديس والتثمين والتعشير، وكثر التأليف فيها، وفي عللها، وفي أصولها القرآنية؛ وكان من نتاج تلك الأصول هذا الكتاب الذي بين يدينا، والذي أفرد بالدراسة، والتحقيق.
أما الدراسة فقد سلكتْ في مباحث خمسة، خصص المبحث الأول منها لحياة المؤلف وآثاره، أما البحث الثاني من الدراسة فقد تناول نسبة الكتاب إلى مؤلفه، ومصادره، ومادته التي احتوى عليها، بغية توثيقه، والتعرف إليه، أما المبحث الثالث فقد تعلق بمنهج المؤلف في كتابه، والوقوف عند أبرز السمات التي حددته، وقد عمد في هذا المبحث إلى إظهار السمة الأساسية في الكتاب، وهي حرص المؤلف على إبراز وجوه القراءات والمسائل المتعلقة بالأصول القرائية، التي لم يفردها المؤلف بدراسة مستقلة، وإنما أدرجها في فرش الحروف، على غير ما هو مألوف في كتب القراءات، وقد جسَّد هذا المبحث جهد المؤلف في كتابه.
وفي المبحث الرابع كان للمحقق بعض الملاحظات على ما ورد في الكتاب فجعله في هذا المبحث بعنوان "مآخذ على الكتاب" وهي أهم ما سجله عليه، وقد أعرض عن الملاحظات الجانبية، التي وردت في أثناء تناوله الفصول السابقة، خشية الإطالة والتكرار، واكتفى بما لم يذكر؛ وفي المبحث الخامس تكلم على مخطوطتي الكتاب، كما تكلم في هذا المبحث على المنهج الذي اتبعه في التحقيق، وأثبتُ أهم ما قام به من أثناء نسخ المخطوط وتحقيقه.
