يستدعي هذا الكتاب، إلى نفس القارئ، ذلك الشعور برعشة الإثارة لدى رصده مظاهر الكون الغريبة والمدهشة. كما أنه يفعم نفسه بالشعور بالرخاء والسعادة اللذين يتملكانه عند فهمه للكون الذي يحيط به، من خلال العلم الحديث. ويقودنا الأستاذ "نارليكار" في رحلة الاكتشافات عبر الكون، باستخدام أمثلة هي غاية في البساطة، ومن خلال الرسوم التوضيحية الغزيرة. وهو يبتدئ بالأرض والمنظومة الشمسية، ثم يرتفع تدريجياً إلى أبعد ما يمكن أن يوصل إليه من الكون. وتمثل كل واحدة من أعاجيب الكون السبع طيفاً من الظواهر الغامضة، أو طائفة من أحداث مشهودة أو أجرام كونية بارزة، قد تحدث الفضول البشري، وهي غالباً ما استعصت على التفسير.
وتبدأ الأعجوبة الأولى عندما نغادر الأرض، فتثار أسئلة مثل: "هل يمكن أن نرى الشمس وهي تشرق من الغرب؟" أو "هل يمكن أن تكون المساء مظلمة رغم وجود إشعاعات الشمس المتوهجة؟". وتدور الأعجوبة الثانية حول العمالقة والأقزام في عالم النجوم، وكيف تولد النجوم، وتعيش، ثم تموت. وأما الأعجوبة الثالثة فتدور حول جائحة انفجار النجوم العظيمة، وكيف يمكن أن يقدح موت نجم ما شرارة تكون جيل جديد من النجوم. وأما الأعجوبة الرابعة فتدور حول النوابض، وهي تمثل الذروة من الموقتات، أو الساعات، في الكون. وتدور الخامسة حول تأثيرات قوة الجاذبية الغريبة، وأما السادسة فتدور حول أخدوعات المكان، وتبحث الأعجوبة الأخيرة في توسع الكون العظيم كله. ثم ننظر أخيراً، في ألغاز الكون الأخرى التي ظلت مستعصية على التفسير. ونتكهن فيما عساها أن تكون الأعجوبة الثامنة.
ويحوك المؤلف، باستخدام للغة سهلة واضحة، وأمثلة مسلية، نسيجاً لاكتشافات فلكية مثيرة عرفت حديثاً، وهي تبين لنا كيف أنها تدفع الفلكيين إلى اكتشاف أعاجيب الغد.
