لماذا ندرس تاريخ الأندلس فيما ندرس من التاريخ العربيّ الإسلاميّ؟ سؤال قد يبدو - لأوّل وهلة - مستغرباً، لكنّ هذا الإستغراب سوف يزول إذا ما علمنا أنّ تاريخ الأندلس يشمل أكثر من ثمانمائة سنة كاملة من تاريخ الإسلام، وتحديداً من سنة 92هـ (711م) إلى سنة 897هـ (1492م)، أي ثمانمائة وخمس سنين، هذا إذا أغفلنا التداعيات التي أعقبت ما بعد 897هـ، فهي إذن فترة ليست بالهيّنة من تاريخ الإسلام.
من العجيب إذن ألا يعرف المسلمون تفاصيل فترة هي أكثر من ثلثي التاريخ الإسلامي، هذا أمر... والأمر الآخر أنّ تاريخ الأندلس، لكبر حجمه وسعة مساحته، مرّ فيه كثير من دورات التاريخ التي اكتملت ثمّ انتهت؛ فقد قامت فيه أمم كثيرة وارتفع نجمها، وسقطت أمم كثيرة وأفل نجمها، وبينما صارت دولة قويّة وراحت تفتح ما حولها من البلاد، هوت دول أخرى وأمست في عداد المهزومين.
ولقد ظهر، في تاريخ الأندلس، المجاهد الشجاع مثلما ظهر الخائف الجبان، وظهر التقيّ الورع مثلما ظهر الفاسق المخالف للشرع، وظهر الأمين على نفسه ودينه ووطنه، مثلما ظهر الخائن لنفسه ودينه ووطنه.
ومما من شكّ في أنّ دراسة مثل هذه الحقبة الواسعة من التاريخ ضرورة ملحّة لمن يسعى لإستشراف مستقبل الأمّة الذي لا ينفصم قطّ عن ماضيها.
