يتناول الكتاب سيرة "الشحرور" الشاعر " أسعد الخوري الفغالي" ، وأبرز المحطات التي مرّ بها ودوره في نقل الزجل اللبناني من الهواية إلى الاحتراف، وجعله فنا قائما بذاته وإخراجه من المناسبة الضيقة إلى المدى الرحب، وإيصاله إلى "عرش" الفنون الشعبية عبر أوزان سبعة، برع فيها كلها وتميز بالإعجاز والسبك والارتجال.
وقد عُرف بلقب "شحرور الوادي"، ارتجل الزجل قبل أن يبلغ العاشرة من العمر، تعلّم في أكثر من مدرسة، وألمّ بالعربيّة والسريانيّة والفرنسيّة، قبل أن يسافر إلى مصر، من دون علم والديه، ولم تطل إقامته فيها عند عمّه، فرجع ليتسلّم وظيفة في سكّة الحديد، وخلال حرب البلقان نقلته الدولة العثمانية إلى سالونيك حيث أُسر، حتى إنتصار الثورة العربيّة، فعاد إلى لبنان ودخل سلك البوليس لسنوات خمس، أسّس بعدها أوّل جوقة زجليّة.
وعندما زار "شحرور الوادي"، وبرفقته زوجته صديقهما طبيب الأسنان جبرائيل صوايا، وفور وصولهما، قال للطبيب: "داعيك شحرور الوادي... ع طبّك في لي عاده... أنا ومرتي يا دكتور... بتحكّمنا بـ قرّادي..." كان الدكتور صوايا ملماً بالزجل، وسريع الخاطر، فأجابه: "يا أسعد سلّم راسك... قديشو صعب مراسك... ما دام العملي إشعار... بقبّعلك كل ضراسك".
