اكتسبت الفترة الزمنية الممتدة من العام 1970 وحتى العام 1990 أهمية بالغة بالنسبة للباحثين في تطور إتجاهات التيارات السياسية في لبنان، لأنها شهدت خروج كل التناقضات التي رافقت نشوء الكيان اللبناني، ونظامه السياسي الطائفي في مراحل تاريخه كلها، إلى واجهة الأحداث. فجذور الأزمات في لبنان، ومعه المنطقة العربية، تمتد إلى الحقبة الأخيرة من حكم الدولة العثمانية حين نجح التغلغل الإستعماري الأوروبي في القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين بتقسيم الكيان العربي الإسلامي الموحد إلى دول عدة.
جاء هذا الكتاب ليسلط الضوء على طبيعة الصراعات اللبنانية التي كانت قائمة في الفترة الممتدة بين عام 1970 و1990، في أبعادها الداخلية والخارجية عبر طرح الأسئلة التالية ومحاولة الإجابة عليها:
كيف يمكن تفسير توقيت اندلاع الحرب سنة 1975، ما دامت أسباب الإنقسام الطائفي موجودة أساساً وبشكل دائم، وما دام الخلل ضارباً في صلب النظام؟
لماذا تواصلت الحرب بعد أن تم وضع حد لها في نهاية العام 1976 بفعل التدخل العسكري السوري في بداية عهد الرئيس الياس سركيس؟
ما هي آثار التحوّل الجذري الذي طرأ على مسار الصراع العربي - الإسرائيلي، بعد زيارة السادات للقدس، ومن بعد توقيع إتفاق كامب دايفد بين مصر وإسرائيل، على كل من لبنان ومنظمة التحرير الفلسطينية؟ وهل هذا ما دفع "الجبهة اللبنانية" للإنقلاب على تحالفها مع سوريا وتجديد إتصالاتها بإسرائيل؟
