"لو قادتك قدماك ذاتَ يوم إلى مدينةٍ فرأيتَ شوارعَها تكتظّ بالمجانين والموسوسين والممرورين، وقد زاغت نظراتُهم وشحبت أجسادَهم، يتراكضون مهلهلي الثياب، أو يقتعدون الزوايا شعثَ الرؤوس، يهذون حينا وينشدون حينا آخر. ويرددون أسماءَ نسوةٍ يقبعنَ خلف النوافذِ المواربة، يتضاحكن ويتهامسن، وكلّما أحسسنَ أن بعض أولئك المجانين والموسوسين والممرورين يكادُ يثوبُ إلى رشِده، ألقينَ عليهم بكلمةٍ أو ضحكةٍ، أو غمزنَهم بطرفِ العينِ فيتساقط بعضهم مغشيا عليه ويهويَ آخرون صرعى، ومنْ نُجّيَ من الصرعِ والإغماءِ انتابتهُ نوبةٌ من بكاءٍ حادٍ وأنينٍ يُقطّع الأكباد.
لو قادتك قدماك إلى مدينةٍ كهذه، فلا يذهبنَّ بك الظنُّ إلى أنك انتهيت إلى مدينةٍ أصابت رجالَها لعنة أو شربوا من نهرِ الجنونِ الذي تتحدثُ عنه الأساطير، وما عليكَ إلا أن تطمئنَّ، إذا ما بقيَ لديكَ قلبٌ يطمئنُّ إلى شيءٍ، إلى أنَّ حظَّك، أو سوءَ حظِّك، قد رمى بك إلى مدينةِ العشقِ كما تتراءى معالمُها في الإرثِ العربيّ".
