في أمريكا اللاتينية تضطرم تفاصيل هي أقرب ما تكون إلى العبثية، لكنّها عبثية غير التي عرفناها في القرن المنصرم، والتي يشكل عمودها الفقري كتّاب من أمثال كاتب هذه الرواية.
هنا، نحن أمام مريض نفسي، أستاذ جامعيِّ مستهتر، استحوذت على نفسه زوجته السابقة، وبطل الرواية، لا يكشف لنا حتى مرحلة متقدمة من الرواية، حين توشك إجازته على الإنتهاء، عن سبب هربه إلى بلدة الخليج الأبيض، بل سيجد القارئ نفسه أمام شخص يروي قصة وجوده في بلدة ليس فيها ما يميّزها عن المدن الأخرى سوى أنَّها المدينة التي عاش فيها مارتينث إستراداً، الذي يعجبه، دون أن يكون قد قرأ له شيئاً، من أعماله التي يُعدّدها لنا.
يشدّه هذا الكاتبُ فقط لأنّه قادر على الإنتقال من موضوع إلى آخر بسهولة تامّة، يقضي بطل الرواية أيّاماً معزولاً لا يتواصل مع أحدٍ، بإستثناء بعض الفتية وجار له في السكن الجامعي، وهذا اللقاء أو ذاك.
فقط حين توشك إجازته على الإنتهاء يَمْثُلُ الماضي أمامه ليصير حاضراً يُجبره على أن يكشف عن نفسه من خلال إرنِستو سيدي، رفيقه القديم وشريكه التجاريّ، الذي يميّزه في باب ماخور حيِّ الميناء، فتكون لحظة الكشف عن حالته العصابية، عن هوسه، عن جريمته التي هرب منها مادياً وذهنياً.
إنه يهرب من الماضي لكنّه يكتشف أنّ الماضي موجود وقابع في أعماقه، وينتهي بالإعتراف لسيدي بكلّ ما ارتكبه، وهنا يعود إلى الواقع ويعود إلى الحقيقة اللذين يقيمان في لبّ الرواية.
