يعرض هذا الجزء تاريخ الفكر الفلسفي من خلال أبرز ممثليه. وبذلك سيتعرف القارئ إلى أبرز الموضوعات التي تطرحها الفلسفة وعلى الطريق التي أعطت فيها إجابتها عنها، وإلى طرقها وإلى تصوراتها. تشير النظرة الإجمالية في بداية كل فصل إلى الخلفية التاريخية.
تسمح طريقة تأليف هذا الكتاب بإحاطة كبيرة بالأنظمة الفلسفية كما تتيح اختيار حقب زمنية معينة. إلا أنها وبالشكل المختصر الذي وضعت فيه فهي لا تستطيع أن نعرض لكل الفلاسفة ولا تعرض من عرضت لهم كل التفاصيل. من هنا كان التركيز على مفاهيم فلسفية وعلى بعض المدارس. مع تقديم شروحات ورسومات مصورة تتناول الأفكار الفلسفية، كما يشرع هذا الكتاب بتقديم حقول جديدة وطريقة عرض جديدة أيضاً. فعلى اللوحات المقابلة للنص أن تعرض النص وأن تكلمه وأن تختصره أيضاً. فهي تهدف إلى إشاعة فهم أكثر عمقاً وإلى طرح أسئلة جديدة أيضاً.
