"وقف ثم دنا من المكان الذي انتزع منه القطعة من أعلى الردم. ومد يده إلى قطعة كبيرة وراح يخلخلها بيده في نشاط ومثابرة. وكان رواءها عدداً من الحجارة فتسقط على قدميه وتحدث فيها جروحا. لذلك مضى عليه وقت طويل وهو يزحزح القطعة، ولكنه أخرج معظمها من بين قطع أخرى، وذلك بفضل غطاء العلبة التنكية. لقد وقاه ذلك الغطاء من الجروح التي يحدثها ذلك العمل. فامتلأ قلبه أملاً إذ قد تكون تلك القطعة ستراً لفتحة في أعلى الردم، فإن أزاحها تدفق عليه هواء نقي جديد يبعث فيه الهمة والنشاط. لم يبق إلا جزء صغير من القطعة. وقد لاحظ وهو يزحزحها أن فضاء كان يظهر ثم يختفي حولها. فأيقن أن وراءها فتحة تمكن الهواء في الخارج من دخول الفراغ الذي يقف فيه.
وأخيراً أخرج القطعة, ألقاها على الأرض. وهنا تدفق النور والهواء. فانشرح صدر خالد وابتهج سروراً. لقد نجح في عمله، فأطفأ وقادة السجائر. ها هو الهواء البارد النقي الجديد يتدفق عليه، فأخذ يتنشقه في شره ولذة. وها هو النور يطل عليه من الفتحة حاملاً معه الصحة والمسرة".
