كانت الشمس متلاهبة، في كبَد السماء، وشَواظُ أشعّتها تكاد تعمي عينيه، وراحت الآفاق تركض مبتعدة، تهرب منه، ومعها تهرب واحة، تتخايل فيها الأشجار والغدران والظباء. وكلما أقترب الجند بخيولهم من جحدر، أسرعت فرسه في عَدْوِها، رغم ما تعانيه من تعب، وجروح بليغة، فهي مثل فارسها شجاعة، عنيدة. فجأة، وهذا ما لم يحدث من قبل مرّة، ولن يحدث مرّة أخرى، كبت البرق، فقد تهاوت، وتهاوى معها فارسها، فوق الرمال الحارقة. ومن بعيدٍ، سمع جحدر، وهو ينسحق فوق الرمال، صَبيّة تصيح بصوت فاجع : جحدر..جحدر..جحدر. رفع جحدر رأسه، يا اللّه ، هذا صوت ليلى، ما زال يتردد فتـيّاً في أعماقه، رغم السنين. ولجحدر قصّة مع الأسد إقرأ الرواية وستعرف التفاصيل.
