منذ بدايات الشعر الفارسي الحديث ظهر شكلان أساسيان مهمان هما: الشعر النيمائي ويحمل هذا الشكل قالباً ووزناً جديداً، بينما يدعى الشكل الثاني (السبيد) أو الشعر الحر، وهو شكل خال من الوزن والقافية لكن الإيقاع الداخلي له أثر واضح عليه.
لقد اتجه الشاعر الإيراني المعاصر في قصيدته مفارقاً لتقنيات القصيدة الكلاسيكية ومنها التشفير، مقترباً بذلك نحو الواقعية، مبتعداً عن المجاز وتمثيلاته، بحيث صار أكثر إحساساً بما يدور حوله مما جعله أكثر إبداعاً وحرية في التعبير عن تجربته الإنسانية، وطموحاته التي تتجاوز الممنوعات التي تصنعها الأنظمة القمعية المتخلفة القادمة من ظلام القرون الوسطى.
من جانب آخر فالشاعر الكلاسيكي الإيراني مستمر في شكله الشعري لا تفارقه الأساليب البلاغية ذاتها من الإستعارات والتشبيهات ونزولها في المحتوى نفسه وهو التعبير عن العشق والفراق والحب الحقيقي والمجازي والرثاء والتصوف.
